How much does a whole chicken cost?
Whole chickens from Little Blue's Farm are $4.99 a pound and birds run 3 to 6 lbs, so a whole chicken comes to roughly $15 to $30 depending on the bird. Most land near $22. The price includes processing and the giblets, so there is no second bill and nothing to add at pickup. Buy 20 birds or more and the per-bird price drops.
How big are your whole chickens?
Our whole birds run 3 to 6 lbs, and a typical one is about 4.5 lbs. Because they are raised in small batches rather than pushed to a uniform target weight, the range is real — you may get a 3.5 lb bird and a 5.5 lb bird in the same order. You are charged for the actual weight of the bird you receive, not an average.
Do you give a discount for buying a lot of chickens?
Yes. Twenty or more birds saves $1.00 per bird, thirty or more saves $1.25 per bird, and fifty or more saves $1.50 per bird. Call (309) 613-0563 before you place a large order so we can confirm bird availability for the batch and get the discount applied correctly.
Is your chicken cage free and antibiotic free?
Our birds are raised cage free and all natural on our own ground between Morton and Mackinaw, with no added hormones, no steroids and no daily antibiotics. Antibiotics are not used routinely as a growth or preventive measure. If an individual bird gets sick it is treated and goes through the full withdrawal period before harvest.
Is the chicken fresh or frozen?
Frozen. Every bird and every cut is double-wrapped and flash-frozen after processing, never vacuum-sealed. Frozen is what lets us deliver across six states and what lets you buy several birds at once instead of one at a time. Thaw a whole chicken in the refrigerator for 24 to 36 hours before you roast it.
How much freezer space do whole chickens take up?
Plan on about 1 cubic foot of freezer space for every 35 to 40 lbs of packaged meat. Ten whole birds is roughly 45 lbs and needs a little over a cubic foot. Twenty birds is roughly 90 lbs and needs about 2.5 cubic feet, which most chest freezers handle without a problem even with beef already in them.
Can I buy chicken feet and backs for bone broth?
Yes, and they are the best value on this page for it. Backs and necks are $4.99 a pound and feet are $5.99 a pound. Feet are what make stock gel on the counter, and backs and necks carry the meat and marrow that give it flavor. Several of our customers also buy livers, gizzards and hearts on a standing order for raw feeding their dogs.
Is your chicken processed under USDA inspection?
Our chicken is processed under federal inspection alongside our beef and pork. Poultry falls under the Poultry Products Inspection Act rather than the Federal Meat Inspection Act, so the mark of inspection is shaped a little differently, but the oversight is the same. Call (309) 613-0563 if you want the establishment number for the facility your order went through.
Do you sell chicken to restaurants and schools?
Yes. We supply schools, restaurants, grocery stores and caterers with standing orders, fresh or frozen, whole birds or by the cut. Federal inspection is what makes that legal. Call (309) 613-0563 or email questions@littlebluesfarm.com to talk through volume, delivery frequency and pricing.
